belief in perfection

the creative process can be really frustrating. i've always put too much pressure on myself to be perfect. now, perfection is creating an image that affects people...many people.

there is no formula. you have to trust your instincts and make something that you feel is great, deep down inside. but there seems to be a catch 22. sometimes ill really believe in something, and it wont get any response. other times, it'll be something insubstantial that people love, and i sortof knew it was good but didnt place too much importance on it. the more you try to please others the more you displease yourself. which is ironic, because i'm trying to do both. i suppose it isnt black and white.

there is what you believe to be good and what others believe to be good. in between the two, perfection may show up.

(and i do love a momentary belief in perfection)

Perfection is an unachievable goal no matter who you are, so you might as well get that into your head before you drive yourself crazy. People have varying tastes and perspectives, you'll never please the masses. I say keep doing what you're doing. Snap a ton of pics and put them all up, and if you get the photographers equivalent of 'writer's block' then take a break. You don't have deadlines and the wolves aren't at your door. Just do what you do and don't worry too much about it. I think pretty much everything you've ever done has been great, I just don't tell you that all the time, maybe a lot of other people feel the same way.

I think perfection can be attained through mathematics.  Maybe you could start implimenting the golden ratio into your photography...then when someone asks you why you need your calculator to take pictures you can just tell them its easier than doing quadratic equations in your head.  Or you could just keep doing what you're doing because your pictures look good to me.

Yeah, ok, whatever!  I try to help, but no.  Fine!  You should rename this post "Perfection - or As Close as I Can Get to It Without Giving a Damn".

Vitruvian man is doing cartwheels in his grave.

Wow, sorry if that last bit came across as wicked snarky...especially since my first comment made no sense whatsoever.  I can't edit for some reason.

i like the word snarky

Not to be *snarky* but I think perfect balances only occur by happenstance, like when parts of the scale pass eachother and for a moment they are in line. I think you can view that like, symbolically too..

Ness, want a little inspiration?, watch the PBS documentary on Annie Lebovitz. It was pretty cool/ interesting.

Forget me. I don't know what I'm saying.

That's not snarky Joe.  If you wanna be snarky you have to be way more sarcastic and jerky.  Snide + Remark = Snark

Ness don't need no instructions to know how to rock
